Quotes, dynamic menus and more
We have another update. This one is a little late but it's packed with some big changes. Let's head over to the list.
- Quotes have been introduced! You can attach a list of favourite quotations to the books on your profile.
- Both quotes and comments are now equipped with privacy options. When set to 'private', they are hidden from other users.
- On a profile page while browsing the list of books, you can click the 'more' link to see an overlay menu, that lets you instantly view the user's public comments, quotes and some summaries
- Similar dynamic menu allows you to edit your book information and add new content.
- Finishing a book is no longer a requirement for rating it. From now on you can start reading a book, stop it and mark the book as disliked.
- It's possible to define the day you've finished reading the book.
- Searching for books and authors have been improved a little.
Issues related with book suggestions haven't been addressed this time. I still plan to target them according to the last plan but it has to wait a little more. Until then suggestions will be hidden (they're visible after clicking on the 'more information...' link).

Book suggestions
|
Today's update introduces book suggestions. The site will analyze your taste, compare it with others' likes and try to pick some books for you. The list can be found on your profile page. The feature is in its early stages and there are some bad scenarios that might happen:

Prettier embeddable images
|
As announced, some information about upcoming features. There are two major plans for growth for this site: 1. Become a useful tool for bookworms, or 2. Turn into a book-oriented community portal. I think that option one will be more beneficial and therefore I'll try to introduce more user-centric features (book suggestions, quote boxes) instead of community-centric ones (forums, messages, avatars). Feel free to argue with me here. Also, check your goodies page. The images that you can embed (on your blog or in your forum signature) have now a new, prettier look. Regards |

Books and ratings
Finishing a book doesn't mean the end of story. It's a start for analysis, reflections and a source of various emotions. As a help in recording these impressions a new feature has been created, from now on you can mark the book you've read as: "disliked", "liked" or "adored". This update will make it easier to express yourself in your profile, but should help when browsing others' profiles too. If you have any suggestions or opinions you'd like to share, let me know.
Cheers!
PS. There is an error in the "Recently read" list, it displays mistakenly older records too. I'll fix it soon. update: fixed!
Comments, community portals
The site has just received another couple of updates. Here they are:
- It is now possible to edit and delete comments. Also you can view individual comments on separate pages, which should improve readability in some cases. The look of comments have also been tweaked a little bit.
- In profiles there are now links to the comments that have been made by the person and they appear next to the relevant books. The idea was to make it easy to browse somebody's opinions, thus facilitating searching for new books. There's lots of space for improvements here though.
- We've had a error in our spreadsheet exporter which prevented everyone from accessing it. Fortunately it works fine now.
- And yes, we're on Facebook. Here. The profile is open so you needn't to have an account there to browse the content. If you wish to add there some of your creation (photos, writing), it's also possible.
If you have any comments regarding these changes or booksyouveread.com in general, please write below.
Have fun using the site!
Big list of small changes
Today's update introduces a number of fixes and features. Let's see the list:
- Most of the pages have now proper titles, as a result the site is more bookmark-friendly.
- If there has been an update to the blog in the recent two days, a notification in the top bar shows up
- There are no more known errors in the commenting system; also whenever you comment a blog post, message or book, your submission automatically receives a positive rating sent from your account (you wouldn't write anything you don't consider valuable, would you).
- In the 'goodies' section there is an option to export whole list of your books to a spreadsheet. If you ever want to leave this site, there's no need to lose your data. But better stay here.
- Comments to books are no more hidden, and you can add them whenever you wish. All posts will be automatically tagged with the information whether its author have read the book he's commenting on. That's an experimental feature, we'll see how the site prospers with it.
- Authors palette has been fixed; the image is too small to display most frequently read authors, so they're now visible in a list below the pie chart.
- Also hell seems to have frozen over, preparations are being made to create profile on facebook for booksyouveread.com . I will post an update if this succeeds.
Cheers!
Still alive
Having experienced a difficult time (nine months without maintenance and 34 days of being offline) the booksyouveread.com site is back.
Though I'm still suffering from the lack of time I plan to monitor the site's life more actively. And occasionaly make improvements. Some of them have been made just now:
- The look of the pages have been tweaked a little bit, they are (hopefully) more aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly.
- Most important errors related to the display of the comments have been corrected (still quite a few remain).
Have fun!
A little about the history and future
This is the first post in the booksyouveread.com 's blog! The site itself exists since February 2009. Its first version allowed to create an account and add books from the existing database into the list, thus visualising one's reading habits.
Current update brings the new features such as: posting comments, viewing more statistics, slightly refreshed layout and (last but not the least) this blog.
Still there's a lot to be done, the overall look and usability needs to be improved; there's also place for new functionality, such as quotes or wishlist. Or maybe something different? If you have any suggestions regarding improvements on booksyouveread.com , please include them in your comments.
Have fun using the new version of the site!
